Why more and more Western Europeans are choosing Spain

Why more and more Western Europeans are choosing Spain
5 Dec

When people dream of a second home or a life with more sunshine and tranquillity, Spain often comes to mind. Yet many buyers start their search broadly: perhaps Portugal, perhaps Italy, perhaps France, perhaps Spain. Only during the orientation phase do they discover why Spain is so appealing—and why so many Western Europeans eventually settle on this country.

The first reason is livability. Spain feels, for many, like a place where holiday atmosphere and everyday comfort come together. The climate plays a major role: with more than three hundred days of sunshine a year and mild winters, people simply feel different here. But it goes further than that. The air is drier than in many other southern European countries, which is often more pleasant for people with joint or respiratory issues. As a result, a lifestyle emerges in which you spend almost the entire year outdoors.

Spain is also easy to reach. From the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and other Western European countries, countless direct flights depart daily for the most popular regions. Unlike some other countries that are mainly accessible in high season, Spain can easily be visited even in winter. This makes a property not only a summer dream, but something you can truly use throughout the year.

Another important factor is what people get for their budget. Spain offers a wide and modern range of properties: from new-build apartments to spacious villas, often with pools or communal facilities. Compared with other southern European countries, many buyers find that Spain offers a more favourable balance between price, space and quality. It feels not only affordable, but also practical and comfortable.

What also attracts many people is the way everyday life is organised. Supermarkets, healthcare, roads, hospitality services and international communities—Spain’s infrastructure is modern and accessible. Foreign residents quickly feel at home. For families, winter residents and investors, Spain is a place that works well without requiring significant adjustments.

Lastly, there is the daily rhythm. Life moves at a slower pace, people spend more time outdoors and social encounters happen naturally. Many buyers later say that this may be the most important reason why they ultimately chose Spain: life simply feels lighter, easier and calmer.

When you combine these factors—climate, quality of life, accessibility, housing options and everyday comfort—it becomes clear why so many Western Europeans begin their search in several countries but end up in Spain. The country offers a balance that is difficult to match.

In the next chapters, we will take a closer look at the differences between regions, the various types of properties available and how to determine what best suits your needs.
